19 November 2020

GiveWell has named SCI Foundation as one of its ‘top charities’ for the 10th consecutive year.

GiveWell is a non-profit dedicated to identifying the most impactful giving opportunities globally and publishing the full details of its analysis to help donors decide where to give.

It conducts in-depth research on a range of criteria including evidence of cost- effectiveness, funding need and transparency to identify its top charities.

In 2019/20, 43% of SCI Foundation’s income came from GiveWell-influenced donors.

Following the announcement, Wendy Harrison, SCI Foundation CEO, said:

“I am delighted with this endorsement from GiveWell. This recognises SCI Foundation’s cost-effective approach, working in partnership with Ministries of Health in sub-Saharan Africa. We know this will be reassuring for existing donors who trust our work and we hope will encourage others to join us in our efforts to treat and prevent neglected diseases”.

SCI Foundation, formerly known as the Schistosomiasis Control Initiative, supports and facilitates public health programmes that reduce the impact of preventable diseases like schistosomiasis and soil-transmitted helminthiasis (intestinal worms).

These infections can result in reduced school attendance and impaired development in children, and can cause internal organ damage in both children and adults. Infection has also been linked to an increase in risk of contracting HIV in women and girls.

In 2019/20 SCI Foundation supported 61.5 million treatments reaching people in 13 countries in sub-Saharan Africa.
